On later 2006-2012 models the O/E heated grip material is very hard and slippery. I believe this is what causes the hand ache and subsequent complaints that the throttle return spring is too heavy (Its not). Fitment of a set of grip puppies give the rider decent grip again and helps to eliminate this problem. Obviously they will slightly increase the diameter of the handle bar grip but it is minimal.
