Every 8,000 miles the FJ1100 and FJ1200  (and XJR12/1300's) valve clearances needs to be adjusted. This tool allows the removal of the shim (on top of the bucket) so that it can be replaced with that of a correct size.
The only other way is to remove the camshafts which is a difficult and long winded way to do the job.
New Shims are available but you wont know what sizes you want until the clearances have been checked and shims removed. So you order shims after checking. It may be possible to exchange some shims around with those removed.
Note: Some clearances will always be out of limit, so dont let anyone tell you they have checked them and they are all ok... there fibbing)
